Wells Fargo Lounge Moline Illinoiss Stickered Peace Dollar

Wells Fargo Lounge Sticker Description
The sticker has a cream background with black lettering. The sticker reads: “WELLS FARGO LOUNGE Highland Park Bowl 4204 23rd Ave. MOLINE, ILL.” What is really interesting about this coin is that in very small print at the bottom of the coin is information on the printer. This is the only coin I have ever seen that contains such a mark. While it is hard to read the printer logo says: “Allied Printing * Trades (Union Label) Council * Tri-City” with a number “5” to the right of the logo.

History
Lounge History
The more I research this coin the more I like it. The Wells Fargo Lounge is still in existence today and located in the same spot. It opened in 1959. Highland Park Bowl was a 48 lane bowling alley that also had a lounge. 23rd street has since been renamed to Avenue of the Cities. As well The lounge/bowling alley has since been renamed Fargo Dance & Sports. This coin would have been made within a few years of the lounge’s opening.

Information on Trade Council
At the bottom of this sticker you will see the Union “Bug” at the bottom. As I said before this is the only sticker I have ever seen with a union label on it. The number 5 to the right of the label was the union number. The #5 is no longer in business, but the Allied Printing union is. Here is the link to their website: http://www.alliedlabel.org/ I would love to know the history of why the owner of the Wells Fargo Lounge choose to have union labor do the work. Was it union loyalty on his part or was there a bit of a shake down involved? I would love to know more about it.

Wagon Wheel Saloon Lake Tahoe Stickered Peace Dollar

Wagon Wheel Saloon Sticker Description
This sticker has red lettering with a gold background with a blue wagon wheel in the center. The sticker includes a small buffalo/steer skull with a small cactus. The wording on the coin reads: “I CAME FROM WAGON WHEEL SALOON * LAKE TAHOE * HIGHWAY 50 * STATE LINE NEVADA”

History
This coin dates from pre 1960. In researching this I found that the Wagon Wheel Saloon has been renamed 3 times. It is now called Harveys Lake Tahoe and is one of the largest landmarks in Lake Tahoe. From 1944 to shortly before 1960 the casino was named the Wagon Wheel Saloon. Here are the links to several great articles that you might be interested in reading (link, link, link). This coin is most likely from the early 1950s and would have been a souvenir in the gift shop.

This coin is highly collectable. It is not extremely rare, but it is uncommon to find one in good condition like the one pictured above. This coin can collect a premium if it is in good condition. The uniqueness of the sticker adds to its value and it is a coin any collector would like to have in his or her collection.

The Log House Restaurant Shawnee OK Stickered Peace Dollar

Corning Sticker Description
This sticker is a white rectangle with black lettering that reads “HOME OF THE SILVER DOLLAR LUNCHEON THE LOG HOUSE SHAWNEE, OKLA.”

History
What this sticker lacks in eye appeal it plenty makes up for in its history. This restaurant was co-owned by the founder of the Sonic Drive-In.

In 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Smith and his partner were operating the Top Hat root beer stand and the Log House Restaurant. For five years, they ran both restaurants. However, the two concepts had very different economics. Smith learned that high-end restaurants might earn more gross revenue, but profits were limited. In 1955, Smith ended his partnership and got out of the Log House Restaurant. The Top Hat had been the cash cow for the Log House because profit margins were four times greater than those of the steakhouse. Smith eventually put all of his efforts into the root beer stand while discovering a better way to make money in the restaurant business. It was called a drive-in.

An entrepreneur in every way, Smith focused on turning his Top Hat root beer stand into a successful drive-in concept. During this time, he pioneered the use of angled and covered parking, along with an intercom speaker system that allowed customers to place orders from their cars. “Service With the Speed of Sound,” became the tagline for the Top Hat.

…. An attempt to copyright the Top Hat name in 1958 failed so Smith and Pappe looked up “speed of sound” in the dictionary and discovered the word “sonic”.

This is the only coin I have seen, and I believe it to be very rare. I would guess very few of these stickered dollars still exist today.

Club Las Vegas Sticker Peace Dollars

About:
These two coins are great to have side by side. It is hard to say exactly how the address was printed incorrectly, but I believe the first coins they created had the address mistakenly printed as “711 W. Las Vegas”. You will notice the second coin has “Colo. Springs” at the top. This was most likely to clear up any confusion, but they still got the address incorrect. They had to fix the sheet of stickers with a typewriter.
The Sticker Reads:
1. “Club Las Vegas Dancing Nightly 711 W. Las Vegas”
2. “Colo. Springs Club Las Vegas Dancing Nightly 711 E. Las Vegas”

The coin I would really like to add to this collection is the one where they got the address correct, though to-date I have not seen that coin. These coins are fairly hard to find, but I have seen a couple others on auction sites.

History:
I believe these Sticker Dollars are from the late 1950s most likely when the club opened. I was able to track down newspapers from Colorado Springs from January 1960 where police were called to the club on a domestic issue. I was able to track down an ad for the club in a June 1968 newspaper.

The ad reads:

This is a Coal Dollar Sticker on 1922 Peace Dollar

About:
This sticker reads: “This is a Coal Dollar”. You will find these stickers on both Peace and Morgan dollars. These do come up at auction from time to time, so holding out for a nice sticker is an option. When I purchased mine it was the first that I had seen, so i purchased it in the condition you see. Since that time I have seen about 5 more of these show up at auction. While these do not have a “pretty” image they are still rather collectible. My guess is that fewer than 200 of these coins are still around, though that is just a guess.

History:
This coin is from the 1950’s and was produced by the Jonesville Coal Company located about 30 miles outside of Wasilla AK. The Jonesville Coal Company paid their employees with these silver dollars. The company wanted to show the surrounding communities just how much the company meant to the local economy. For several weeks the surrounding communities were inundated with these coin. 1951 St. Cloud Minnesota Pioneer Days Sticker

About:
This Peace Dollar sticker reads: “St. Cloud Aug. 3-4-5 1951 St Cloud C. of C. ‘PIONEER DAYS'”, and shows a moving covered wagon with a Father, Mother, and baby in the front. The sticker is blue with blue, red, and white lettering. This coin is highly collectible. The image is fun and unique with the sticker taking up the whole back of the coin. This coin is one to have in your collection even if the quality is only minimal. I have only seen two of these coins so if you see one it might be your only chance to buy one.

History:
This coin was put out by the St. Cloud Minnesota Chamber of Commerce in 1951 in celebration of Pioneer Days. I have no other info on this coin. If you can add to the history of this coin it would be appreciated.

Spenard Alaska F.O.E. Bingo & Dart Game Sticker

This sticker reads “F.O.E BINGO 8 P.M. Thursday & SAT. DART GAME 2415 SPENARD RD. SPENARD, ALASKA”. This coin is collectible for those who collected stickered dollars by state. Most collectors want a coin from each state if they can get them. I really hate how bad the image looks. The gold sticker reflects the light and make a good picture almost impossible. This coin looks nothing like the picture. The sticker is in perfect condition and is a bright gold sticker with green text. This coin can be found on auction sites and coin shows. I would recommend waiting for a really nice sticker if you are looking to buy one.

History:
Spenard Alaska is a neighborhood located just outside of Anchorage Alaska. This sticker was created by the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E) in Spenard. This most likely originates from the 1950s.

Silver Dollar Bar at the Wagon Wheel Lodge

About:
This sticker reads: “THE SILVER DOLLAR BAR AT THE WAGON WHEEL LODGE ROCKTON, ILLINOIS”. I have this sticker on both a Morgan and Peace dollar. These coins can be found on Ebay and coin shows, so unless you just have to have it then wait for a sticker that is of good quality. The coins shown here are a Peace dollar and Morgan. I believe these coins were a souvenir pieces and probably dates from the 1950s.

History:
The Wagon Wheel Lodge opened by Walt Williamson in 1936. He had the 240 room lodge built from old bridge timbers and telephone poles. The lodge had 240 rooms and 4 furnished apartments. It included 4 dining rooms, 4 cocktail lounges, golf course and year round swimming pool. There was also indoor ice skating and riding stables. The lodge was open the entire year.

Margo’s Buckeye Roundup Sticker

About:
This coin is a common stickered dollar, but is one that most collectors want in their collection. I’ve seen these on both Peace and Morgan dollars. The sticker reads: “Margo’s Buckeye Roundup 2384 Lake BLVD.”, which is written in red lettering on a transparent sticker. When buying one of these I would recommend waiting to find one that has a sticker in good condition. It also helps to find a coin that does not have much wear. The coin below meets both of those conditions.
Note: One reason that most collectors like this sticker is because it is transparent. Only a small percentage of stickered dollars had transparent stickers.

History:
When I first purchased this coin I assumed it was a coin from Ohio, but after a few dead ends I found that this coin was from a Cardroom in Reading California. Margo’s Buckeye Roundup closed in 1966.

Idaho Ghost Town Hollywood Robbie Silver Dollar

About:
This sticker is on a peace dollar and reads “Souvenir of IDAHO GHOST TOWN – U.S. 30”. It also has an ape with the words Hollywood Robbie across the overalls. This is really a great coin and I would be very surprised to find that there are more than a few of the in existence. The rarity of this coin mixed with the great graphics on the sticker makes this coin extremely desirable. I would personally put the value of this coin at over $350. I believe the coin would be worth more if the history of this coin could be tracked down.

History:
I have done a ton of research on this stickered coin, and have not been able to find any useful information. I have even researched all the Ghost Towns along U.S 30, which in now part of Interstate 86 in Idaho. There are no Ghost Towns that stick out. As well I have not been able to uncover any information on Hollywood Robbie.
